Caspar Brötzmann Massaker (de)
Friday May 30th
18:00 - 18:55 / Concertzaal (de Vooruit)
Born out of the unrest and upheaval of the late 1980’s Germany, the Caspar Brötzmann Massaker is a legendary jazz-rock trio fronted by guitar virtuoso Peter Brötzmann. Known for their unconventional and uncompromising compositional approach, CBM have revolutionised the world of noise rock, championing a style that is loud, abrasive and often improvisational, which never fail to wrong-foot and amaze the listener.
Their now legendary records “The Tribe” and “Black Axis” incorporated elements of punk and noise into a solid kraut rock foundation, featuring unusual time signatures, tempo switches, and atypical song structures as well as moments of pure compositional genius. Throughout the tracks on these albums, Peter Brötzmann keeps one foot on the distortion pedal, while the other is firmly planted on the accelerator, getting progressively louder and more radical. Supported by his ensemble, he chants, screams, bellows and howls, breaking boundaries and smashing both standards and eardrums in the process. It’s hard to imagine the shock and surprise, the frenzy and the weird fascination that such a revolutionary sound must have caused upon release, but it’s easy to see why even 40 years later these records are still celebrated as groundbreaking iconic releases.
Unhinged, provocative, unabashed, CBM lead the way of musical experimentation. Their ultra heavy riffs, ferocious climaxes, resound with actual physical force and elevated the band to the cult status they rightfully flaunt. It’s hard to resist this walls of sound and not let loose, no matter the time and place, for CBM possess a unique tribal and energetic quality that makes their music impossible to resist. A true feat for all music lovers, the trio will be reunited once more at dunk!festival 2025 for a celebration of music in all its shapes and forms.
