Pijn (uk)
Friday May 30th
16:00 - 16:45 / Concertzaal (de Vooruit)
Pijn are forerunners of a new wave of post-rock bands that incorporate strings and samples into their sound to expand over the genre’s confining boundaries and compose more immersive soundscapes. Against the backdrop of this newer wave, Pijn have always set themselves apart for the uniquely and profoundly evocative character for their music. Their latest record “From Low Beams Of Hope” rightfully featured on every “best records of the year” list, including ours, thanks to its ethereal and emotive nature.
Structured around four long tracks, the album is highly reminiscent of GY!BE’s older catalogue, not only in form but also in sound, thanks to its suspenseful advance, cryptic nature and bombastic climaxes. However, thanks to its pronounced post-metal vibe and punk-ish attitude, the album quickly moves away from the obvious analogies (and cliches), showcasing four compelling tracks, which never fail to manifests both gripping melancholy and uplifting hopefulness. Besides, the violin playing over the massive breakdown at the tail end of “On The Far Side Of Morning” is still one of the best things we heard all year.
We’ve already witness the band play a part of the album live and can assure you (in the unlikely instance you needed reassuring) that they’re absolutely phenomenal! We cannot wait to hear more and so should you, so see you there!
