Lethvm at dunk!festival 2022

October 13th, 2023 • 20:00
Lethvm (BE)

Tones are dark, tempos slowed-down and syncopated, themes bleak and heavy, however there’s much more here than an uncompromising taste in destruction. From the first spin, Winterreise reveals a surprisingly emotional vulnerability, focused on personal struggles and topics dear to the band, like melancholia, loneliness and anger, and a honesty that’s disarming and fully convincing.

This record is massive, it is heavy and unforgiving, but highly immersive and ultimately, addictive. Meant to be played loud, Winterreise is only the latest addition to dunk!’s heavy catalogue and Lethvm’s lethal discography, but certainly already a standout and highlight in both the label’s and band’s repertoires.

Jo Quail is an internationally acclaimed composer and virtuoso cellist from London, UK. Equally at home on stage solo, with bands, or in collaboration with choir and orchestra, she combines an eloquent mastery of her instrument with innovative looping techniques, to realise her complex, evocative music for audiences worldwide.

Inspired by the visual arts as much as by fellow composers, Jo cites Barbara Hepworth and Georgia O’Keefe as key influences, alongside the diverse music of Debussy, Pärt, Tool, and Trent Reznor. As a result, she freely crosses the boundaries between genres, awakening listener emotions, and taking audiences into uncharted territory with each concert. Her exuberant, celebratory performance style has won her a fanbase in the contemporary classical world as well as among enthusiasts of progressive music, post-rock, metal and electronica.

TURPENTINE VALLEY (be) + SAGOR SOM LEDER MOT SLUTET (se)

TURPENTINE VALLEY (be)
Belgium based Turpentine Valley reduces its post-metal to purity, ‘etching’ it to the soul of anyone open to it. No words, massive sound. Hitting it hard. Layered guitars. Growling bass. Allowing music to tell its story: slow, intense, hard and relentless. Releasing its debut album ‘Etch’ through dunk!records on November 1st 2019 was the next step in spreading their instrumental post-metal ever since. Three songs from that record (‘Vergeten’, ‘Trauma’ & ‘Abrupt’) can be heard in the soundtrack of the Netflix crime drama 'The Twelve'. On 25 February 2022, dunk!records releases successor 'ALDER' on 12” vinyl in Europe, A Thousand Arms Records releases the album in the US on vinyl and cd, and Ripcord Records takes care of the UK-release of this album on tape. On this new album, the band explores the dark boundaries of the instrumental post-metal genre even more explicitly, without compromising on melody and intensity.

SAGOR SOM LEDER MOT SLUTET (se)
Sagor Som Leder Mot Slutet is an instrumental post-rock and post-metal band from Sweden mixing darker and heavier themes with gentleness and fragility.

Their self-titled debut album released with a unique forest soundscape, Post Rock Essentials calling it one of the best albums of 2016. Nominated as “Best newcomer” and “Best album”, it culminated in aesthetic and visual live shows like VIVID Post Rock Festival.

Their follow up studio album “π” is about reaching the far ends and depths of the world drawing inspiration from the sea and in-cooperating equally haunting as beautiful violins performed by Malmö Opera consert maestro Wojtek Mileros. It was mixed and mastered by Magnus Lindberg (PG Lost, Alcest, Cult of Luna, etc) and recorded at Studio Gröndahl (Katatonia, etc), Arctic Drones reviewing it for both attacking and caressing all your senses, capturing both elements uniquely and successfully.

In 2019 Swedish motion picture “Iris”, directed by Mattias Olsson for Midvinterfilm (Försvunnen, etc) premiered at international film festivals and won best narrative short, for which Sagor Som Leder Mot Slutet composed and recorded the original motion picture soundtrack.

2022 finally marks the new chapter where the band looks as much outwards as inwards at the existential vastness of time and space with the new album “III” on the event horizon. Mixed and mastered by Magnus Lindberg, this time with a more synthesized – vast, yet frail – soundscape.

ROOK (be) + BANK MYNA (fr)

ROOK (be)

Adventurous listeners seeking to escape from the expected to the exceptional are likely to find themselves enchanted by the Ghent based collective ROOK, whose unique vision of psychedelic rock is rife with mystery and a dark kind of spirituality, informed by principles of doom without being anchored to them. A powerful synergy between the visceral and the ethereal. Their debut full length 'Infinite Empty' got released on dunk!records last year and is well worth your attention!

BANK MYNA (fr)

Parisian band Bank Myna is the dark creator of a post-rock and doom universe all its own. Intimate and atmospheric passages alternate with monolithic eruptions in a breathtaking interplay between shadow and light. This French formation likes to give breadth and power to its compositions in an instinctive live act, oscillating between drone sounds and dizzying noise explosions. Unsettling and authentic!

IT WAS A GOOD DREAM + OF THE VINE

Another warm-up for dunk!festival 2022 with two label bands on the bill!

UPDATE: Of The Vine had to cancel their appearance. They’re stuck at JFK airport with a delayed flight ahead… Bummer! But we’ll see them at dunk!festival, right?!

It Was A Good Dream (us)

The Boston, MA duo It Was A Good Dream travels within a world of delicate textures, contemplative nuance and passionate outpour, a band that encompasses the aesthetics of traditional post-rock while embracing its ever-growing sonic palette.

Of The Vine (us)

Atlanta, Georgia’s Of The Vine spent the better part of the 2010’s as one of the most criminally underrated bands in all of post-rock. But we’ve been taking steps to change that. They performed admirably at dunk!usa, and now we proudly present them as one of our own, as both their newest release Left Alone and the re-press of their magnificent 2015 album East-The-Water are available from dunk!records. They are a true treasure of the genre, a band with the patience and confidence to allow their compositions the necessary space to breathe and grow and flourish.

STORIES FROM THE LOST + WOLV

Stories From The Lost (be)

Stories From The Lost was founded 10 years ago but is still able to provide a refreshing sound on their latest and 4th album. They only brought this album to an (online) audience once at dunk!2021 but will now make it up and blow you away at dunk!HQ.

Wolv (be)

Wolv is also a hometown band that has been shaping their sound in the dunk!spaces. This is a rather new band but the members already earned their stripes in numerous other projects and will definitely convince on a dunk!stage.

RANGES + I HEAR SIRENS + ASTODAN

What about a nice warm up for dunk!festival with 3 label bands? Yes, please!

Ranges (us)

Their music has consistently progressed album by album to keep up with their abundance of ideas, culminating in 2021’s Cardinal Winds, their biggest and most impactful record to date. There is no shortage of fans that gush over the lavish packaging that accompanies Ranges’ records, or the painstakingly devised puzzles and riddles that bridge the gap between their releases, but those who have seen them live can attest that their true strength lies in performance.

I Hear Sirens (us)

Over a decade ago this Salt Lake City band was already receiving praise for their dramatic interpretation of a style that was at the time still coalescing into the modern traditional post-rock we all know today. After seven years without new music, they triumphantly returned with Stella Mori (2020), which has become a centerpiece album for our stateside friends at Post. Recordings.

Astodan (be)

It seems not long ago that this Belgian band was a newcomer that we had taken under our wing at the label, and now suddenly they’re firmly rooted veterans who have made quite a name for themselves among fans of both post-metal and post-rock. Their new album Évora, their first one with vocals, will be out on May 6th!
