Kokomo (de)

Satuday May 16th
18:45 - 19:40 / Main Stage

It sure has been long enough that premium post-rock outfit Kokomo have played for us and equally long that they haven’t graced us with new music. With the sole exception of “live in isolation” the Duisburg natives have not gifted us of any new music since 2019’s Totem Youth, an album that only added to their legacy and mystique thanks to an ever-stronger sense of weird hopeful alienation. Well this year the band plans to fix both things for you, by releasing their new record “WHIP” and live premiering some tracks off it for you on Saturday!

Formed in 2008, Kokomo have always stood out thanks to their mastery of dynamic contrasts between melodic build-up and crushing climax and especially the emotional depth of their compositions. Always gripping and compelling, each of Kokomo’s four albums flow effortlessly between melancholically joyful tracks and devastatingly sad tunes. Often haunting, at times chilling, at other times hopeful and romantic, Kokomo’s soundscapes are most of all immediately and entirely recognisable. All qualities that define their music however, none of them manages to fully paint the gripping picture that is a Kokomo soundscape. Like the true masterpieces that hang on the walls of art galleries across the world, Kokomo’s records need to be witnessed first hand to be fully appreciated, understood, and loved.

Kokomo hold a very special place in the dunk!universe, they are the very first band ever released on dunk!records, with their 2011 debut album 'If Wolves' inaugurating both their journey as a band and ours as a label. With both having since grown into some of Europe's finest, this special 15th anniversary calls for a celebration, and while we do yet not know what exactly, we do know the band is planning something special for us all. They have played dunk!festival several times and their connection to the festival runs deep.

Their 2019 record 'Totem Youth' showed a band still expanding, still hungry and their live performances remain among the most energetic and immersive the post-rock world has to offer. To top it off, the band will also be releasing their first new album in 7 years, with “WHIP” landing on May 14th of course on dunk!records. The band is preparing a truly special package for this release, and of course we also don’t know what is, but we’re sure it will be special. Returning to dunk!2026 feels, quite rightly, like a homecoming and a “full-circle” moment for both us and band, so welcome back lads, we missed you.
