The Evpatoria Report (ch)
Saturday May 16th
16:50 - 17:40 / Main Stage
For a band named after a telescope flying off everyone’s radar seems fitting and at the same time outrageous. Federico’s poor puns aside, it is quite a mystery how The Evpatoria Report managed to release two of the most gorgeous and iconic album of the second wave of European post-rock, only to disappear into oblivion for nearly 20 years shortly after. The effective radio silence only added to the band’s mystique and over the years the Swiss have reached a true cult status, comparable to that of gods of the genre like Mogwai and Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
This dunk!festival feature then is not only overdue, but also entirely deserved, as The Evpatoria Report have almost single-handedly brought post-rock back from the grave with their two albums Golevka and Maar. Released in 2005 and 2008 respectively, these two album reintroduced post-rock to a wider audience and stablished the band’s reputation for hypnotic, polyrhythmic guitar textures and lush violin-and-keyboard arrangements. These soaring soundscapes were always completed by cosmic themes and an overall suspenseful and tense aura, something that would have lent itself well to a Hitchcock movie.
The Evpatoria Report are one of the most respected post-rock bands in Europe, and by far the most mysterious. Little was known of them when in 2005, they dropped the now-iconic “Golevka” and much less was heard of them over the two decades that separate it from today. Fast forward 20 years and it truly feels like a whole era has gone past. Our beloved festival that started that same year on a basketball court is now recognised internationally, and the overall post-rock scene is as vibrant and healthy as ever, expanding across borders as well. However, The Evpatoria Report hardly enjoyed any of the commercial success that such an incredible achievement would rightfully grant them, opting for a spot out of the spotlight instead. Haunting, chilling, eerie, yet strangely hopeful, Golevka came to represent the Euroepan post-rock scene as a whole, and barely shows a sign of aging, sounding as fresh today as it did twenty years ago.
The key to its long-lasting success lies its revolutionary sound and lush arrangements, its suspenseful ambiance, and the juxtaposition of contrasting sounds and moods, oscillating between the most cheerful (song name) to the most devastatingly crushing (name . More than for just the music itself however, Golevka came to be appreciated as it represented the pivotal album in a post-rock revival movement that would take the sound birthed overseas by titans Tortoise, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor, expand it, and breathe new life into a scene that seemed dead and buried. Finally joining us at dunk!2026 The Evpatoria Report will climb the stage propelled their now legendary status, with a celestial sound that will once again reach for the stars, right where a band of the finest lineage of post-rock like them belongs.
