We Lost The Sea play: Departure Songs

Saturday May 16th

Few stories in post-rock are as powerful as that of We Lost The Sea. Formed in the outer Sydney suburbs, the band lost their vocalist and close friend Chris Torpy to suicide in March 2013 at only 24 years old. Rather than succumbing to grief and dissolve, the remaining members channelled all sadness into the masterful 'Departure Songs' (2015), a concept album inspired by heroic human sacrifice in the pursuit of greater things. This monumental album, featuring a Sydney girls school choir, plenty of huge climaxes, and one of the most devastating closing tracks in the genre's history, is rightfully considered one of the absolute best in the genre.

In 2017 We Lost the Sea played a once-in-a-lifetime set performing the album in full on our very stages, on an unforgettable performance that became nothing short of legendary. After being delayed at the airport and train station, the band arrived to the festival just hours before their scheduled time slot and played without sound-check. As if that wasn’t an achievement in itself already, that set turned out to be an absolute beast of a show, still amongst fans’ favourite sets and in our very own top 10 dunk!festival shows. We simply had to immortalise it for you to share with generations to come, releasing it on vinyl a year later.

Now, almost 10 years after that legendary show, the band is ready to make history again, by performing the album live once again, this time with a little help. Get ready to make history with We Lost The Sea as the band performs this cult classic with the aid of a 10-strong orchestra. Closing our 2026 in full bombastic style, this set is another unmissable performance that will go down in annals of post-rock!
